American History World History

My greatest enjoyment and the cornerstone of my thinking is the study of History.  It is one of my greatest beliefs that what we know to be right or wrong are the lessons of history.  The events that came before us led those before us to evaluate and to determine what was good, what was bad and what worked for keeping the cohesion of society in place.  Everything we know is so because of history -- one man learning one thing led to another discovery either by that man or his community of thinkers. These discoveries are passed to the next generation so that they may test them, modify them, improve upon them and then pass them on to the next generation. As this process continues we participate in making history so that we can make things better for all and pass that on to our next generation -- so the argument goes.  Unfortunately, societies don't always use the benefit of history for the good of society and many times instead of eliminating the bad, that is passed on as well -- people ignore the lessons of history.

The most important aspect of history is that man's knowledge of those things in his universe comes about because of what he knows through history, the process of discovery -- the provable things that raise our curiosity for the future.  Without the study of history we are greatly limited as to what knowledge has already been gained for us.  Without knowledge, we are without the wisdom that is gained through history.
